Range Safety & Facilities
Safety Orientation Classes
All new members and members who let their membership lapse are required to attend a Safety Orientation class as part of their application for SSSC membership.
The purpose of the Safety Orientation Program is to improve on all aspects of safety on-and-off the range. Our objective is to communicate a consistent interpretation of the important safety rules—as well as policies, procedures, and protocols for use of range facilities—via a face-to-face session and procedures.
Safety Orientation classes are conducted at the SSSC range and are approximately 1½ hours in duration. The Club’s Range Safety Officer—or RSO designee—conducts the orientation classes.
Upon completion of the class, the RSO submits verification of attendance to the Club secretary for continuation of the membership application process.
Orientation classes usually are held on the 3rd Saturday of the month at 10 a.m. at the SSSC range. Please check the Events calendar for the next class scheduled.
Range Facilities
Basic Firearms Safety Rules
to be followed at all times, on and off the range
- Treat all guns as if they are always loaded
- Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy
- Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target and you’re ready to shoot
- Be sure of your target and what is behind it
Other
- During informal shooting activities with no designated Range Safety Officer, it is the responsibility of every shooter to ensure all the safety rules are followed by all shooters
- SSSC members are responsible for the safety and conduct of their guests. Members are limited to two active shooting guests at a time.
- Eye & ear protection is mandatory for everyone (including observers), except during a cease fire
- Children must be under the constant control of a responsible adult
- Unless changed by the designated Range Safety Officer, the firing line is parallel to the front of the shooting tables. Shooters may sit at the tables, or stand immediately behind or beside them.
- 90 Degree Rule: The muzzle of the firearm must never break a 45 degree angle to the left or to the right from a line that is perpendicular to the firing line
SSSC Range Safety Rules
- Cased guns can be moved to/from the firing line shooting tables at any time (not behind the firing line), but guns are not to be uncased/cased (or touched) while people are downrange
- Uncased guns must not be moved to/from the shooting tables or long gun racks while people are downrange
- Uncased guns must be holstered or carried with actions open and muzzles up
Cease Fires
- The pistol and rifle ranges are separate and distinct. Each range may have its own Range Safety Officer. Shooters on one range may shoot on that range, even if there is a cease fire on the other range. All other posted safety rules apply at both ranges.
- Anyone may call an EMERGENCY CEASE FIRE if an unsafe condition is suspected. All guns must immediately be holstered or tabled until the unsafe condition is resolved.
- During a GENERAL CEASE FIRE, all guns must be holstered, or unloaded and tabled/racked with actions open
- No guns shall be TOUCHED IN ANY WAY while anyone is downrange
The following are STRICTLY PROHIBITED on all range property
- Alcohol and marijuana
- Illegal drugs
- Tracer or incendiary ammunition
- Disorderly or reckless conduct
- Shooting at non-Club-approved targets (refer to web site FAQ’s for club approved targets)
